As of February 15, 2017, the OnTarget Precision Calculator v1.10 is no longer available for download.

The decision to stop distributing OnTarget v1.10 was not made lightly. Since first becoming available in 2008, OnTarget programs have been very well received and successful. The programs have been downloaded and used by thousands of shooters to measure the performance of their firearms, components, and shooting ability. A big part of that success has been v1.10, the freeware version. It was the ultimate "try before you buy" package and was the gateway for numerous users to move up to other versions of OnTarget programs.

OnTarget v1.10 was released in April of 2008 and was, for many years, very stable and bug free. However, due to changes and advancements in hardware, technology, and the Windows family of operating systems, it has become increasingly difficult to support new installations.

For these reasons, as of February 15, 2017, the v1.10 installation package has been removed from the OnTarget Shooting website, and OnTarget Software will no longer support new installations of the OnTarget Precision Calculator v1.10 program.

If you currently have OnTarget v1.10 installed on your system you may continue using it at no charge, per the original licensing agreement.

Please note: OnTarget Precision Calculator version 1.10 is owned and copyrighted by Jeffrey Block and OnTarget Software LLC, and is no longer being distributed. Jeffrey Block and OnTarget Software LLC will not be responsible for the integrity, safety, or usability of the installation package received from any other source.

As you can see, the free version of the OnTarget Precision Calculator will no longer be available for download. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me at OnTarget Software.

This is the first new release since version 2.10 became available in February 2011. I had originally planned to provide regular updates, but a very short-term contract position turned into a long-term position, leaving me little time for OnTarget development. Thankfully v2.10 was very stable, and I was able to correct most issues on a case-by-case basis. I'm currently between contracts and I've used this time to roll up all the changes into version 2.25.

Version 2.25 contains improvements and bug fixes that were implemented over the last six years, including:

Disabled the "Server Busy" message that appeared on some systems during scanning.

Improve font sizing and spacing when printing the project.

Corrected a few issues with data export.

Added selection for Minute Of Angle (MOA) / Milliradians (mil) selection.

The .tgx project files are now cross compatible with the OnTarget TDS program.

Updated Help system.

There is no upgrade charge for registered users of v2.10, please go to the OnTarget FAQ web page for more information on the upgrade process.

Current development efforts include a new version of the OnTarget TDS program, along with several new projects in the next couple months.

Thanks for supporting OnTarget!
The last new version was a year ago and during that time I've added several new features and made numerous general improvements. I will be updating the TDS History webpage with all the details but here are some of the high points.

Added a second Target Data window that has Standard Deviation and Circular Error Probability calculations for the virtual group.

Updated target data printouts with new data fields.

MOA/Milliradians output is now selectable.

OCW data printing.

Other improvements to printing, display, data export, calculations, etc...

The significant change for v3.81 is the addition of the Import Point Data feature. TDS, and other OnTarget programs, are limited to gathering data from a single target image. If a shooter wanted to combine the data from multiple targets they had to export the data from TDS, and run their own calculations in a custom spreadsheet.

The Import Point Data function reads the point data .csv file adds those shots back into the currently selected group. This allows the shooter to create a virtual group using data collected from multiple targets over an extended period of time.

A good example of this is was done by the author of the Art of the Rifle blog. He shot six ten-shot groups spread over the month of January and wanted combined group information for all 60 shots. To gather the data he reopened each target project and exported the point data to a single .csv file. He then imported that .csv back into TDS. The resulting group showed him what he could expect from his rifle if he didn't re-zero each time out.

The Import Point Data function is another tool for gathering and combining meaningful data in the search for better accuracy and precision in our shooting. I've given one example of how it's been used. Let me know how it works for you.

There are seven new targets in the 50's range. Each target prints using only black ink and has an outer ring with a single inner dot. Shots must be completely inside the outer ring to be automatically detected.

Detecting bullet holes on a black and white target is a new feature for TDS and is much more difficult than locating holes in the red and blue targets. Give it a test and, good or bad, please let me know how it's working for you. I've done a lot of testing but I could use the feedback from the field.

In addition, I'm continuing work on the electronic target frame (see my previous post for more info and a YouTube link). The latest design has several notable new features. First, I've changed over from wired to wireless communications. The new communications link has a manufacturer stated range of one mile but this may be somewhat overstated. I can't be sure until I do more testing but I'm hoping for a kilometer. Second is an optional configuration using three microphones on one side of the target instead of a microphone on each corner. A three microphone configuration has theoretically limited accuracy at the outer edges of the detection area but it is much easier to set up and works very well inside it's sweet spot. Lastly I've switched over to new microphones that are more suited to the the application. The microphones have adjustable gain and detect the sound of the impact with better reliability.

During my latest basement tests, using an Airsoft pistol and various pump-up pellet rifles, the system is detecting about 95% of the impacts and the calculated position is acceptably accurate. As soon as the weather clears up in Colorado I'm headed to the outdoor range for testing with .22 and center fire rifles. I'll post the results here on the blog.

Safe shooting everyone!
If you have trouble printing from the program Email Me and I will provide a download link to v2.16.

The latest release of OnTarget TDS is v3.78 which includes, metric support, better printing, and several new targets. You can download the latest version here: OnTarget TDS.

I've been working to add a shot velocity field to both OTPC and TDS. For now the values are entered manually, but my plan is for TDS to communicate directly with the chronograph to get the velocity string, and automatically associate the data with the correct shot.

Lastly, for the past few months I've been working on a prototype of an electronic target frame. The target frame would detect the location of a shot and send the information directly into TDS. Each of the major components of the system have undergone initial development and testing. A few days ago I did the first end-to-end test of the system and created this video Target Frame Test. The target frame works by detecting the sound of the impact, in this case the tap of the pencil on the target, at each corner. A high resolution timing circuit calculates the time difference of the sound reaching the corners. That timing information is sent into TDS which calculates the location of the impact on the target and displays it as a shot on the screen.

The system shown in the video is designed as a test of the concept and is made up of breadboard circuits that are basically cobbled together. The test went very well. The shot locations are accurate and repeatable considering the lack of calibration in the system. The communication between the target and TDS was stable. My next test will be to detect an Airsoft pellet impact on a target and display the position.

Watch the video and Email Me your thoughts.

Over the last two years I have made several changes to the program to correct problems with the target printing and data export functionality, along with some general improvements.

Until now I have only passed the new version, OTPC v2.14, along to a select few users that were having specific problems with v2.10, and it has performed as expected. At this time I would like to expand testing of v2.14. If you are a registered user of OTCP v2.10 and would like to test v2.14 please Email Me and I will send the download link. I would like to have about 50 users do the update so I can track the process and correct any issues that crop up.

After successful testing I will be releasing the new software with an updated help system and full list of improvements.
I have just released OnTarget TDS (Target Data System) Version 3.70 on an introductory basis.

TDS has been in the development and testing phases for the last couple years. Unfortunately, during that time it has taken a backseat to several other projects and I was unable to complete development of all the planned features however the program is very usable for ammo testing and benchrest practice, two of its primary uses.

Several of the TDS testers have encouraged me to release the program as is because it has proven value in its current form and I have been working toward that goal for the last several weeks. The program is still a little rough around the edges but has shown to be quite stable and mostly bug free. The help file needs work to fill in some missing sections and there are a few incomplete features including; full metric capabilities, OCW and Ladder displays, and some printouts.

Go here: OnTarget TDS Website to download your free trial get started with TDS.

A couple of more things. Use the 15 day trial period to make sure TDS operates properly on your system. If you have problems contact me and we can work through the issues. I can extend the trial period if necessary to finish any troubleshooting. And, if you purchase the program in its current form there will be no charge for future TDS updates.

As always let me know how the program works for you by contacting me through the website.

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-45558065125323202032011-11-30T06:32:00.003-07:002011-11-30T07:03:14.901-07:00Scanner CompatibilityI receive a number of questions relating to scanners that can be used with the OnTarget programs. For obvious reasons I am unable to test every scanner available on the market. And, while most brands and models of scanners will work properly, there are some that will not interface directly into the OnTarget programs. For this reason I recommend testing your system during the 15 day trial period to make sure everything is working properly. If you have a problem, contact me through the OnTarget website and we can work things out before you buy the program.

Scanner selection is even more critical when using the OnTarget scoring programs. Most competition targets are 11"x17" or larger which requires moving up to a large format scanner. While quality 8.5"x11" scanners can be found for under $200 the price jumps to $1000 and up for the same quality in large format scanners.

My current recommendation for use with the OnTarget Scoring System programs is the Epson GT-20000 large format scanner. This scanner consistently scores targets faster and more accurately than any other we have tested. The GT-20000 can be found new online for about $1000 shipped. Several users have purchased this scanner used for under $700. An eBay search this morning found two for sale in that range.

For more information please visit the Large Format Flatbed Scanner website and read the Epson GT-20000 11x17 Scanner Review

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-15054631148391182532011-10-14T05:34:00.004-06:002011-10-14T05:58:02.412-06:00OnTarget Development NewsTDS (the OnTarget Target Data System) is nearing release. Most of the features have been completed and tested. The largest remaining task to to make the program 100% metric capable. There's still work to be done on the help file and changes on the TDS website and the program will become available for sale. In the mean time contact me if you'd like to take TDS for a test drive.

Plans have started for improvements to the OnTarget scoring systems. Discussions are under way with the ARA for changes in next year's scoring system. In addition I am working with several other organizations to create custom scoring systems for their targets.

The OnTarget Precision Calculator has had several improvements. Following are images of a test target along with the OCW test dialog.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 302px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqgc7j0UI1ntU5U4ZPpmg8PfuFL688RKVYLGa_Rw2V2DdNfm3Ds7epVmnS8ROVssc-sULghXoZDgFM9UEhGSQ_aO-hYtAMZ_9CPFHeQbWXvb4RPgd5V64ikeifYZb7ZN9VM60t33oxujk/s320/1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635529818398015842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHDj1YNdk3Y_JNbkdSgR6pfT_lodG87orixzY6jk_9XROB_lCLjIpoOw7Nhk1gurVYcXDWmD-W-boOg_27cCzCZp4HeK5iepx_yhwCNtg36pdb82w1FeXx5qkdmJcfEw1_t35XaQQD-FQ/s320/2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635529822411803522" />

The first image is the target with nine three shot groups. The second is the OCW test dialog. The red circles represent the average distance to center (mean radius) of group and are positioned using a common point of aim. The red line helps visualize the order of the groups. The small list box shows the calculated ADC and string length for each group. The string length for each group is the sum of the distances to the previous and following group centers (for the first and last group it's 2 times the single distance). In the list the smallest group size is indicated by the '*' and shortest string by the '#' characters.

When analyzing OCW test results the shooter is looking for adjacent groups that have the smallest group size and the group centers closest together. The loads for those groups will produce the most accurate and consistent groups. By looking at the group display we see that groups 4 and 5 meet these criteria. TDS allows the user to quickly generate and visualize these test results without the need for tedious manual measurements and calculations.

Please visit Dan Newberry's OCW website for the definitive description of Optimal Charge Weight calculations and analysis.

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-91844002525660865792011-07-05T09:06:00.002-06:002011-07-05T09:59:28.842-06:00OnTarget Programs UpdateSorry I haven't posted for a while. I've been busy working on the OnTarget TDS (Target Data System) program, supporting the Precision Calculator and ARA Scoring programs, along with working a full time contract position. I'm busy and that's a good thing. Here's an update on the various programs.

The next program coming from OnTarget Software is the Target Data System. With TDS the shooter can easily gather data for multiple shots to create groups that would be impossible to measure and quantify using other measuring techniques. By using custom targets (first image below) and the same technology used in the ARA and PSL scoring programs TDS automatically gathers positional data from each shot and creates high shot count composite groups. Group data is calculated including: group size, group center, average distance to center, group size, and offset from center. The results are shown in the Group Data Dialog (second image shown below) and may also be printed and exported for use in a custom spreadsheet. The same data can be generated for any target by scanning or importing the image and manually defining the groups.

If you are interested in exploring the capabilities of TDS send an email to ontargetsoftware@msn.com and I will provide a link and login credentials to the download website.

The OnTarget Precision Calculator price has been permanently lowered to $11.99 and is performing well. A few minor issues have been found and I will be doing an update in the next couple months. Registered users be able to update their system at no additional charge.

The ARA Scoring System has been released and is currently in use at several clubs. The program has been well received and appears to be quite stable. Contact me if you are interested in looking at the ARA Scoring System for your club.

That's it for now. Enjoy shooting and remember to be safe.

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-81553610956656100312011-04-01T06:17:00.002-06:002011-04-01T06:46:44.485-06:00v2.10 Introductory Price ExtendedI've decided to extend the $11.99 introductory price for the OnTarget Precision Calculator until June 30, 2011. The program has been well received with very few reported problems but there are a few changes I would like to make before the price increase to $14.99. I still need to fix a small problem with the fonts when printing the targets along with a couple other minor issues. I will notify all licensed users when the update is available.

On the subject of software updates. Licensed users will be able to download and install updated versions of the Precision Calculator at no additional charge. This includes future versions that have been translated to languages other than English.

The ARA Scoring System is very close to general release. I've already started working with several match directors to get them up and running with the program in preparation for the 2011 shooting season.

The Target Data System (commonly referred to as "TDS") is generating interest with shooters that are serious about ammunition testing. TDS quickly generates data from large strings of shots that can be used for a variety of calculations. TDS provides several native calculations and can export shot data to an Excel compatible data file. I hope to have TDS ready for sale by the end of May 2011.

-JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-55208864434169407952011-03-20T06:17:00.003-06:002011-03-20T06:38:45.256-06:00ARA Scoring Program nearing releaseSorry for the light posting. The day job was taking up most of my extra time.

I have put the finishing touches on what will become the first released version of the ARA Scoring program. There have been several improvements to program usability and the program will now export the scores directly to the Excel spreadsheet used at most matches to calculate results. This weekend I'm contacting several match directors that have shown interest in the program. I'll be working to get them started using the program at their matches. The "official" release announcement should be on the ARA website within a few weeks.

Next I'll be moving on to the TDS (Target Data System) program. There's some cleanup, added features, and a new help file. I will also be adding several targets that will print from within the program and be scanned and analyzed automatically. TDS is running somewhat behind schedule but I hope to have it completed and released some time in May.

Take care and shoot safely!

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-43343178929964596512011-02-14T05:52:00.001-07:002011-02-14T06:35:16.252-07:00OTPC v2.10 and ARA Scoring ChangesSpent most of the weekend working on the programs and website. I was never really happy with the flow of the website. A few days ago I received a few suggestions from one of the testers and decided to clean things up a bit. The biggest improvment is that I removed about one-third of the words on the pages. Then I added in some information that was missing. I still need a few new graphics on the Home page and a redo on Quick Start page but overall I think it's looking a lot better.

I've been looking into the text size issues when printing and saving to graphic in the Precision Calculator. The text size and line spacing are not adjusting correctly. After I get everything working I'll be adding more target information to the bottom of the printout. Then it's time for the first update. Should come out as v2.15 some time in March. After that, if everything is stable I'll start the language translations.

The ARA Scoring program is moving along nicely to its release later this month. This weekend I added code that will read and write Excel spreadsheet files. Now I can open the Scoring Program that everyone uses at the matches and export the scores direct into the score sheets. It's the last step in the automation process for scoring targets.

And, an ARA Scoring program report. I had a call last night from one of the guys testing the ARA Scoring program. They had a couple matches on Saturday and Sunday. There were about 240 targets(6000 bulls eyes) scored using the program over the weekend. All the targets were scored using one computer/scanner/printer setup. He told me that the system ran fast and with no problems. Best of all, by the end of the match there had been only three scores challenged and only one that was changed. That's a very successful outing for the program and it's generating a lot of interest from the ARA match directors.

Thanks for visiting and shoot safely.

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-64528786272515071342011-02-05T09:12:00.003-07:002011-02-05T14:58:51.995-07:00Mobile AppsI've been in contact with the creators of a couple mobile apps that should be of interest to users of the OnTarget programs.

The first has developed two programs for the iPhone. iSnipe is a very comprehensive ballistics calculator that has numerous advanced features built in. The other, ShotPlot, is a shot plotting program used to keep records and provide stastistical analysis of your personal shooting diary. Here are the links:
iSnipe™ - The Original Ballistics Calculator for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. (http://www.isnipe.ca)
ShotPlot™ - The Original Marksmen's Plotter for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. (http://www.shotplot.ca)

The other is: Target Calculator for Android. Target Calculator is the first mobile app for measuring target groups. It uses the camera in your Android phone to take a picture of the target. Then place the circles over the bullet holes to measure the group and generate statistics. Results can be posted to the web directly from your phone.

Check them out and let the creators know you found them here on the OnTarget Shooting blog.

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-18166002504599790832011-02-01T21:50:00.002-07:002011-02-01T22:10:52.312-07:00Article in Shooting Sports USAThe OnTarget Precision Calculator is mentioned in the February issue of Shooting Sports USA. The article is titled Making Sense of MOA. The author does an excellent job of explaining how minute-of-angle (MOA) is calculated, how to measure groups and shot positions, and how it all relates to the sights on your gun. He also explains the math calculations behind sight adjustments and how to use that information at the firing line. Check it out, it's a great look into the science that goes into successful shooting.

- JeffUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3546428816744626798.post-4490173348361755442011-01-23T06:19:00.004-07:002011-01-29T09:44:26.550-07:00New OnTarget Precision CalculatorThe next version of the OnTarget Precision Calculator is nearing release. The new features have been added and the program is in final stages of testing. There are still a few bugs to take care of and the new installer is being fine tuned but then it will become available for download from the OnTarget website.

Some of the highlights of the new OnTarget program are:

Target printing is available.

Bullet holes can be edited directly.

Data export has been improved.

Supports both standard and metric measurement units.

Target image can be rotated in 90 degree increments.

Easier operation of the ruler and set reference tools.

More hotkeys for common operations.

The new version of the program will come with a 15 day free trial. The cost for a permanent license will be $15. The existing free version of the program will continue to be available for download on our website.

In addition, work is continuing on our ARA target scoring program and the OnTarget Data System. The ARA scoring program scans an 11"x17" ARA benchrest target, calculates the score, and exports the data to the scoring spreadsheet. The OnTarget Data System is used to gather data during ammunition testing and will also simulate the scoring schemes used by several benchrest organizations.

Check back at the OnTarget website in a few weeks for more information.

- Jeff
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
